Professor Allen has a PhD in Chemistry and was a lecturer in Biochemistry with some hundred publications. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
In 1985, he became the first CEO of the Newtech Innovation Centre in North Wales, which supported the development of over 200 SME over 8 years. From 1993 to 2000 he was CEO of Manchester Science Park and was its Chairman from 2000 to 2006.
He is a Companion and has twice been Chairman of the UK Science Park Association. Through his company, Pythia Consulting, he has advised on innovation and science parks in 36 countries. He is a Director of the Northern Ireland Science Park and has been on the advisory board of Science Park Graz (Austria) since 2002.
He has a Visiting Professorship at Manchester University for his work on innovation. In 2004, he received a national award as ‘the person who has made the most outstanding contribution to the UK science park movement over the past 20 years.
