Tina Birbili was born in Athens in 1969. She is a physicist and has graduated from the University of Athens, Physics Department (1986-1990). She received a Master Degree at Imperial College -University of London on Environmental Technology (1991-1992). She completed her studies by obtaining a PhD (1992-1995) on Environmental Management and Economics.
She has significant experience in coordinating and managing European Union's projects on environment and sustainable development. She has scientific publications in foreign and Greek journals and she has contributed in scientific books. While teaching at the Hellenic Open University she also co-edited the related educational material. She has been an Evaluator on European projects on behalf of the European Union.
During the period 2002 to 2004 she worked at the Office of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, G. Papandreou, on integrating environmental issues into external policies. During the Hellenic Presidency of the European Union (A’ semester 2003), she coordinated twenty-four Working Groups on different themes on behalf of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She has contributed in the development of a European diplomacy on environment and sustainable development and she has been focal point of the European Diplomacy Network on behalf of the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since 2004, she has been advisor to the President of the Panhellenic Socialist Party where she provided coordination and management at the President’s Office. She coordinated the speech-writing team and the drafting team of the Party’s Platform for the 2004 and 2007 national elections. She also contributed in the communication strategy team for the elections of 2007.
Following the elections of October 2009 she was appointed Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change by Prime Minister George A. Papandreou.
