Tony Buckby

Director

He graduated
in English Language and Literature from Nottingham University and has an MA in
Applied Linguistics from the University of Essex. He has a background in
English teaching and teacher training and taught English literature at
university level in Italy. He is co-author of language teaching materials
published by Cambridge University Press. He was School Director of the British
Institute of Florence before commencing a series of cultural relations
leadership roles with the British Council. In 1990 he was appointed Director of
the British Council in Bologna. He later moved to Rome as Director Language
Services for British Council Italy and became Deputy Director British Council
Italy from 2001 to 2004. He then transferred to London as Deputy Director
English Language, based at British Council Headquarters, where he was engaged
in the British Council’s work in Europe, East Asia and China. From 2007 to 2011
he was Director British Council Bulgaria and Cultural Counsellor for the
British Embassy in Sofia before moving to take up his current post in Greece
where he provides direction and leadership for the British Council’s activities
in areas of education, English language and the arts
