David Hannay was a British diplomat for 45 years, serving in Tehran,Kabul, Brussels (several times), Washington and New York. He was Britain’s Permanent Representative to the European Communities ( 1985/90 ) and then to the UN (1990/95).
He was Britain’s special representative for Cyprus from 1996/2003 and worked with successive UN secretary-generals to find a solution to the Cyprus Problem. Since appointment to the House of Lords in 2001 he has served on several of its European Committees and on the International Relations and Defence Committee.
