Elena Akrita is a Member of Parliament and Shadow Vice-Minister of Justice, in charge of Human Rights and Equality within the Parliamentary Group of SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance. In November 2023 she was elected First Vice-Chair of the Equality & Human Rights Committee of the Hellenic Parliament. For more than 40 years she has worked as a journalist, covering important events as the Greek Junta Trial, the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, the Thessaloniki earthquakes, and a series of elections, while she has also conducted interviews with great figures of Art, Politics and Culture. She has written and published 16 books, screenplays for six television series and a play. She has translated and adapted from English and French many plays, prose and musicals.
Elena Akrita is a feminist and human rights activist, with a particular interest in the rights of women, the LGBT community and prisoners, as well as issues of gender and domestic violence. She was honored with an award from the Parents' Association for her efforts in combatting drug abuse. She also dedicates her time to animal welfare, rescuing and caring for stray animals. Her home is filled with numerous stray and mistreated dogs and cats.
Elena Akrita is the daughter of the Greek Cypriot writer Loukis Akritas, MP and Deputy Minister of Education in the 1960s government of Georgios Papandreou, and Sylva Akrita, also MP and Deputy Minister of Welfare in the government of Andreas Papandreou.
