Gunnar Andersson

Professor in demography and head

Gunnar Andersson is Professor in Demography at Stockholm University, with previous work experience as Research Scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock, and resposnible for population forecasts in the Stockholm region of Sweden. He chairs the Stockholm University Demography Unit which hosts a set of research programs with focus on fertility and family dynamics, migration and integration, and ageing and mortality.

He supervises PhD projects in Sociological Demography at Stockholm University and is co-organizer of a research school in register-based research together with epidemiologists at the Karolinska institutet. He has long experience of research on family dynamics in Sweden and the other Nordic countries, often based on longitudinal population-register data of these countries and mostly with a focus on the gendered and social-policy dimensions of such dynamics. In his research, Andersson has documented and interpreted trends in Swedish and Nordic family dynamics and investigated the role of different family policies, labor-market attachment, migration status, settlement size and/or gender in childbearing behavior. He produced the definitive estimates of union formation, union dissolution and re-partnering for Europe and the US in the 1990s and early 2000s. Empirical studies and media outreach during the last few years have addressed recent trends of Swedish fertility decline as well as fluctuations in fertility and mortality during the course of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Andersson has organized Swedish participation in Swedish and international Roadmaps of the Generations and Gender Programme and is member of the Swedish Academy of Sciences.
