Kostas Bakoyannis

Mayor of Athens

Kostas Bakoyannis has been governor of central Greece since 2014 and has served as mayor of Karpenissi, from 2011 to 2014.
Born in 1978, he graduated from Millfield School in 1996 (UK) before going to Brown University (USA) to study history and international relations. He continued with postgraduate studies at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government (USA), in the field of public policy, with a specialization in macroeconomics. Currently he is working on his PhD thesis at the University of Oxford, in the field of political science and international relations.
He has worked at the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a consultant and as executive manager in an investor relations and corporate communications company in Athens and has held positions in various European and international organisations, such as the European Parliament in Brussels and the World Bank in Kosovo.
He is also the vice-president of the Hellenic Agency for Local Development and Local Government, a council member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and a Greek Leadership Council member of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
