ENERGY SECURITY ON THE ROAD TO 2030

Security of natural gas supplies has resurfaced on the European energy agenda because of concerns about an anticipated rapid increase in dependence on imports from non-European suppliers – from one-third to two-thirds of demand – over the next 20 years. The European Union’s hopes for diversification depend on the decision of the Shah Deniz II consortium. In June-July 2013, the final investment decision will be made regarding the transport route of the natural gas from Azerbaijan.

At the same time, new sources in the East Mediterranean have been greeted by the question: fuel for tension or fuel for cooperation?

Greece is keen to explore new hydrocarbon reserves south of Crete and in the Ionian.
